I'm all prepped for the retirement home.
I think it's funny that now that I have cable again, and a whack load of time, the only things I actually watch are King of the Hill (which is criminally underrated) and the Sunday morning 2 hour chunk of Coronation Street.

    Gut Reaction to Watchmen

It could've been worse, but Jesus, what the hell?

Full post to follow, if my heart into it...

Na na na na na na na na BATCAKE!
Colleen made this for an Oscar party we went to Sunday and I decided to share:

    Another Twitter-sized post
I feel kinda guilty applying to graduate for film theory when I can't even win an Oscar pool.

To say nothing of the smell...
You know what's awesome? Watching Benjamin Button in a theater full of seniors with shoddy hearing and only a tenuous grip of theater etiquette.

The things that keep me up at night
It bothers me that Monday will either be the best Family Day I've ever had, or the worst one.

    January Twitter Movie Reviews
So, somewhere along the line I hit 100 movies. That's 100 movies in less than six months. Not bad, I guess. Anyways, here's some highlights:

Bad Santa (2003): 6/10 So audacious in trying to be the anti-Christmas movie that it goes overboard at times. Billy Bob is -too- convincing.

Tarnation (2003): 3/10 A doc about somebody's life? Great idea, but poorly implemented.

A Few Good Men (1992): 7/10 It's funny watching a movie about improprieties at Gitmo the week it's ordered to be closed.

Hellboy, Nixon, and the T-1000 )

Any excuse to whip out the word "Marxism"
I do not look forward to going to class tomorrow and listening to a bunch of snot-nosed kids talk about workers' rights.

    I'm Back (A Dinosaur Story)
So, it was a virus all along. Huh, didn't see that coming. Anyways, my hard drive is secure and I'm back.

    AWOL
My computer decided that 2009 was too much for it, and decided to quietly slip into a coma. She's not dead, mind you, but she's not very functional. So, aside from an occasional email check at Colleen's , I'll be offline. I intend to use this free time to learn how to knit. Wish me luck.

    December Twitter Movie Reviews
So Happy New Year and all that jazz. 2009 has treated me well so far, so I predict good things. Or rather, not bad things. Anyways, after the lackluster-athon that was November, I decided to watch some decent flicks. Since it was Christmas, I naturally had to rewatch my two favourites "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Die Hard." Let's get to it:

On Deadly Ground (1994): 7/10 The answer to the question: Hey, what would "An Inconvenient Truth" be like if Steven Seagal directed it?

It's a Wonderful Life (1946): 9.5/10 This is the most horribly depressing/uplifting Christmas movie ever.

The Squid and the Whale (2005): 8/10 Thanks, Noah Baumbach, I never want to get married and have kids.

Muppets, John McClane, and more Seagal )

    Day 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8: The DVD Box Set
I was away from the computer this weekend, like most weekends, so without further ado!

    Day 4: The Final Day

Watching my other favourite Christmas movie, It's a Wonderful Life at the Bloor. There were free refreshments!

    Day 5: A New Day

Colleen and I are children, so we decided to exchange gifts at the soonest opportunity. She got me a Polish movie poster of Bladerunner which is awesome. The best part? Who gets top billing along with direction Ridley Scott? Vangelis. Van-fucking-gelis. The music is great, but top billing? Perhaps the Poles idolize 80s soundtrack artists. Poland now strikes me as some sort of Tangerine Dream worshipping utopia.

    Day 6: The Curse

Lazing back, eating the leftovers of a Swiss Chalet Family Meal, and playing Psychonauts with Colleen because it was too fucking cold to go outside.

    Day 7: The Spawn

Pizza party at work. I had grade school flashbacks. Also caught up with Char over some cider and pizza. I think I only ate pizza that day. Score!

    Day 8: Resurrection
Catching up with Scott over our liquid dinner.

    Day 3: The Reckoning
I opened with my boss today and it didn't eventually lead to an argument. It did however lead to this exchange:

[Kate Bush's "December Will be Magic Again" is playing over our stereo]

Boss: God, I hate this song.

Me: Hey, that's Kate Bush. She's a tiny English woman with the voice of a cartoon character. She's like a fetish I never knew I had.

Boss: That sounds like something that happens to you a lot.

I also got candy. So, overall, good day.

    Day 2: The Revenge
Awesome moment of the day? Watching Die Hard with some awesome people. My Christmas season doesn't start until I watch Die Hard.

    Day 1
"The rules are that for 8 days you have to post something that made you happy that day."

    Sure, why not?

So, I rigged the secret Santa on Sunday so that I'd get a particular coworker. I had the perfect gift. The other day we were idly wondering what ever happened to the cast of Ghostbusters. So my gift was a bottle of Dan Aykroyd's Wine. Most of our shift today consisted of cheap shots at Aykroyd's expense.

    November Twitter Movie Reviews
I've been writing my screenplay for class all month, so I haven't been making time for many movies. That'll probably change come the 9th. Before I launch into the reviews though, what the hell is up with the action in Quantum of Solace? The writing is snappier, but the action was a train wreck. The cuts in the opening chase scene are already too quick and choppy, a horrible recent trend in action films, but it gets worse when the cars are almost identical (might as well be when we see them for a fraction of a second). This happens again when there's a rapidly-edited foot chase and both Bond and the baddie are wearing near identical suits. The action was done by the same team who did the Bourne films, but I don't remember being that confounded by them. Anyways, on to the reviews:

Taxi to the Dark Side (2007): 7/10 A look at the Abu Ghraib scandal. Tells it straight with no flash. Very depressing, but necessary.

Son of Rambow (2007): 7.5/10 Thought it was going to be too meta or too cute, but I was wrong. Good to see "First Blood" get some reverence.

J.C.V.D. (2008): 8.5/10 Washed up actors either have to go back to the basics or mock themselves. Van Damme does both with a keen eye.

Eastern Promises (2007): 7.5/10 Daddy issues and culture clashes are subtly addressed. Deceptively simple. Also: best action scene of 2007

Quantum of Solace (2008): 6.5/10 Smarter version of personal favourite "License to Kill", but the action is indecipherable.

The Bad Sleep Well (1960): 6/10 Noir "Hamlet" uses the story to attack corporate corruption, but tells when it should show.

    October Twitter Movie Reviews
Not many this month. But there are some choice hits. Without further ado, here are some choice cuts:

Charade (1963): 7.5/10 Grant and Hepburn could read tax reports and have me enthralled. The twisty and funny script is a bonus.

Withnail & I (1986): 7/10 Absurdist take on city folks "roughing it" in the country with the "heroes" as crazy hopped-up unemployed actors.

Serial Mom (1994): 6.5/10 Kathleen Turner is a joy to watch as a killer suburban mom, even if the laughs go luckwarm towards the end.

    Thanks
I wanted to thank those who wished me a happy birthday, whether through texts, calls or Facebook. A bang up way to start 22. Perhaps I feel warm and fuzzy, but I'd never admit it.

    September Twitter Movie Reviews
So I've reviewed a few less films then usual this month. School and work have kept me busy. But I did see a few I've been meaning to catch forever. Anyways, here's a few choice ones for the month:

RoboCop (1987): 8.5/10 Great sci-fi and great satire. Think of how easily this idea could've been screwed up (just look at its sequels).

Force of Evil (1948): 7/10 The relationship between the two brothers and their degrees of moral ambiguity are the best parts of this noir.

Carlito's Way (1993): 5.5/10 Been done better, but Penn with a Jewfro? Viggo as a Puerto Rican? Adrian Pasdar as a mob boss's son? Gold!

    Dylan, Eastwood, Carradine, Cage )
